The Division “Theoretical Physics of the Institute for Physical Problems was organized on the base of the laboratories of Molecular biophysics andQuantum mechanics of atoms and molecules.

The laboratory of “Molecular biophysics” was established on May, 5th 1980 in order to perform theoretical investigations in molecular biophysics and design the new drug molecules for the experimental studies in the medicine and pharmacology. In the laboratory the spatial structures, the structure-functional relationship, the enzyme-substrate and enzyme-inhibitor complexes of proteins, peptide molecules, hormones and antibiotics were investigated. So, using the theoretical conformational analysis method the spatial structure and conformational dynamics of the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI), which consists of 58 amino acids, were found. The mechanism of the protein polypeptide chain folding at the native three-dimensional structure formation was revealed. The mechanism of the BPTI action was determined by investigation of all stages of enzyme catalyze. Methodical approach for calculations of proteins and polypeptides three-dimensional structures in an aqueous environment was proposed. The conformational behavior of the lysozyme active center was obtained. The conformational aspects of nonvalent complex formation between the lysozyme and oligosaccharides composed N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylmuramic acids were established. The approach for calculation of the spatial structure of oligopeptides on the basis of known amino acid sequence has been offered to investigation peptides which have various biological functions. The spatial structures of melanotropins, peptideT, a competitor of the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus, dermorphins, deltorphins, hemorphins, enkephalins, endorphins, neoendorphin, adrenorphins , b-kazomorphin, valmuceptin, morphiceptin, rimorphin, neurokinin A and neurokinin B from the tachykinin family, Immunoglobulin E(IgE) pentapeptide, the five nonapeptides of calli-FMRF-amides family of neuropeptides, cardioactive peptides, secretin, glucagon, vasoactive intestinal peptide, glucagon family hormones and some of their analogues, membrane active ionophoric and nitrogen oxide molecules and its complexes have been investigated. The obtained results have been correlated with the functions which are carried out by specified molecules.

For the study of interaction and conformational possibilities of molecular complexes in laboratory the universal program (N.M.Godjayev, I.S.Maksumov, L.I.Ismailova) has been developed. Many leading institutes of the former USSR used this program in their research. This program has been applied in Institutes Molecular Biophysics, Bioorganic Chemistry, Leningrad Mechanical Institute of Academy of Sciences of USSR, there are also certificates about these applications. With a view of acquaintance with the specified program the employees of Institute of Organic Chemistry of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan were in our laboratory. Besides this the laboratory in various years cooperated and signed contracts with Institute of Chemical Physics of Academy of Sciences of USSR, with the Istanbul University, with the Azerbaijan Center of Neurosurgery, with Institutes of Radiating Problems and Petro-chemical Processes of National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

From 1980 till 2005 the Laboratory was led by Prof. N.M.Godjayev. During these years 5 members of the laboratory have defended D.Sc., more than 20 – Ph.D. theses. Citizens of some foreign countries have done the research works and defended D.Sc. theses in our laboratory. Results of performed investigations have been reported on the international symposiums, conferences and published in well-known international journals. The members of the laboratory obtained “Internet Access and Training Program in Azerbaijan” grant funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State for the project: “Creation of website for coordination of scientists activities in the field of biophysics and other related disciplines such as ecologic, biotechnology and pharmacology”.

The members of the laboratory participated in educational process, they read lectures on special topics, supervised Ph.D., M.Sc. and B.Sc. theses, were members of Scientific and other councils.
